For Sale: Australian 1946 Ford Ute “Project”

I know that in the motor vehicle enthusiast community every person has his or her own opinion on virtually every topic, but I think it is relatively safe to say that it is now accepted that the first “Ute”, also known as a “coupe utility” in America (or “bakkies” in South Africa), was designed, developed and manufactured in Australia in 1934.

Ford Australia’s growth and diversity of models continued through the 1930s but World War 2 severely affected domestic vehicle manufacturers as they were all required to turn their manufacturing plants over to the ever-growing war effort.

When the War ended, Ford had many leftover 1942 body parts and sales to a car-hungry public resumed. The 1946 model year represents the first year of production following World War 2. Outside trim was nearly identical to the 1942 except for the new horizontal grille consisting of three stainless steel bars below a massive, chrome-plated pair of Ford “wings.” The grille sported red striping within ridges in the metal.

1946 Ford Ute Project

On behalf of its current owner, TrueWest Imports has been given the opportunity to sell a “Project” 1946 Australian made Ford Ute. It is in a dry State of America, remains Right Hand Drive and has always been garaged by the owner who has owned the Ute for 27 years.

The owner started the project on this Ute but, due to health problems, he is now unable to finish it. That is the sole reason for selling.

The frame and all sheet metal has been sand-blasted and is in grey primer. It has the “normal” rust to repair but, according to the Owner, it is not that bad. It has a good floor and needs spot replacement on both front enders. There are some small dents in the rear corners of the bed but all in all it is in very good condition (metal wise) given the age of the Ute and having been used for the purpose for which it was built.

In addition, it has:

  • a 4 inch dropped axle;
  • Volvo model 122 disc brakes;
  • 1957 Ford 9 inch rear end;
  • Front and rear springs have been reconditioned and the eye on the front springs has been reversed and some leaves have been removed;
  • Pete and Jake steering adapter;
  • Very good replacement tailgate;
  • 15 inch slot aluminium wheels;
  • New aluminium 3 core radiator set up for Chevrolet inlet and outlet;
  • All parts to put the vehicle together – glass, garnish rails, stock 1941 dash, stock   Kangaroo leather seat that needs to be re-done; and,
  • the wood in the bed needs to be replaced.

The asking price for the 1946 Australian Ford Ute Project is US$10,000. This does not include the cost of export from the US, shipping and Australian or New Zealand import costs. These can be provided upon request.

If you are a prospective buyer located in America and would like to convert the Ute to Left Hand Drive, the Owner has additional parts to make the conversion for an extra cost.

In 1946 only 1,735 Ford Utes were sold in Australia and fewer than 30 were exported to the US. Only 6 are believed to be currently registered in the US.

This Project, once completed, will ensure that the new Buyer will have a very unique and rare vehicle that will be the envy of friends and on-lookers alike.

Australian and New Zealand “as landed” costs of the vehicle will be posted on the TrueWest Imports’ website as soon as possible. If anyone has any queries before that occurs, please contact me.

As always, I would ask if you can, please donate to CFWA.

1969 HT Holden Monaro GTS becomes first Australian car to win a Concours d’Elegance

It is very rare for any international motoring organisation to recognise or even acknowledge Australia in any sense or form.  However, the prestigious American publisher “Hemmings” has published a post on its daily blog regarding the winner of the most recent Australian International Concours d’Elegance.

The winning vehicle is a 1969 HT Monaro GTS.  It is a truly deserving winner and I congratulate Re-creation Automotive the people responsible for the Monaro’s amazing restoration.

1969 HT Monaro GTSOwned by Mr Terry Smart, the white Monaro GTS beat a field of 85 cars and motorcycles to take the title of Motorclassica’s ‘Best of Show’ to win the premier Australian International Concours d’Elegance title, along with the ‘Restoration of the Year’ trophy for its restorers, Re-creation Automotive.

Smart’s Monaro scored a perfect 100 points from the hugely-experienced Motorclassica Concours d’Elegance judging panel.

HT Monaro engine bayFor a Holden of any type to win an International Concours event is certainly unexpected but this particular example is a world-class restoration,” Motorclassica Event Director Paul Mathers said.

HT Monaro interiorWithout question Motorclassica is the southern hemisphere’s most hotly-contested Concours d’Elegance attracting the highest quality cars and motorcycles from around Australia and often the world.”

In terms of quality, Terry’s Monaro GTS, valued in the vicinity of $300,000, is literally faultless and as such a deserving winner.

As always, I would ask if you can, please donate to CFWA.

1972 Ford Ranchero GT – PRICE REDUCED!! Was originally $37,500 NOW $27,500 ONO.

I am offering for sale this fantastic example of a classic muscle car/ute. It is a one year only design 1972 Ford Ranchero GT. This is essentially the ute version of Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” in the film of the same name.

This Ranchero GT currently located in Western Australia and is fully registered as a LHD car until May 2016. The car is my own personal vehicle which I imported from the United States.

The collectability of this particular year and style of Ranchero in the US is reflected in the fact that few are offered for sale and, when they are, the prices being asked are increasing rapidly.

Please note that the WA personalised plates DO NOT come with the Ranchero

Photo of 1972 Ranchero

The Ranchero was launched from Dearborn, Michigan in 1957 as the American automotive industry’s first ever car/pick-up, two years before Chevrolet’s belated response of the ‘El Camino’!

Undeniably handsome and perfect for the small businessman in the service industry, the model evolved in the late sixties into a full force muscle machine!

Upsizing of the Ranchero continued into the seventies with the 1972 with the release of the “Torino” styled Ranchero. It was said to combine the best of both worlds; a beautiful and fast luxury muscle truck/car. To this day, many fans of the muscle car hold the 1972 model in high regards. To many, the 1972 GT packaged Ranchero was, and still is, the best Ford Ranchero ever made.

1972 Ranchero Grille Front view of 1972 Ranchero

This offering of the 1972 Ford Ranchero GT is an absolutely exceptional example of an original southern California, 3rd owner, always garaged, RUST FREE, and with no evidence of any accidents.

Details:

  • Exterior: The Ranchero was originally repainted with Dupont Imron Dark Blue Metallic & White in approximately 1994. However, I had it repainted in a Dark Metallic Blue and had matte white GT stripes added. While it is still extremely very presentable as is, there are again some minor scratches and imperfections in the paint, most of which could be buffed out if desired.
  • I ordered a custom made hard tonneau cover from Gaylords Lids in Santa Fe, California and had the optional “speed spur” wing added to the cover. The cover is fully lined and has drainage toughs fitted.
Hard tonneau cover with speed sup wing Side view of Ranchero with hard tonneau cover
  • There was a recessed power antenna installed in the body flare behind the driver door and the Ranchero has a custom tube grille fitted. I have, however, had the antenna and the door handles shaved. The doors are now opened with a remote “door popper”. All chrome and aluminium trim is original and has not been restored.
  • The Ranchero also has the US equivalent of a “Hayman Reece” tow bar fitted.
  • The bed is totally free of imperfections or fillers and has a “Line X” protective finish. I also had the battery re-located into the bed of the Ranchero.
Bed of Ranchero Battery relocated into bed of Ranchero
  • Interior: The interior features the GT Rally Cluster with tachometer and quartz clock, factory air-conditioning, interval wipers, power steering, and power front disc brakes. The pillar and window seals have been replaced. PLEASE NOTE – as the air-conditioning was required to be de-gassed and dismantled prior to entry into Australia, the air-conditioning is not currently operational and will need re-gassing and re-assembly.

GT Rally cluster

  • The seat and door panels are unmolested and in exceptional condition for the age of the Ranchero. There is one small scratch in the padded dash. The carpet is original, shows some wear, but is in overall good shape. The original seat belts and shoulder harnesses were replaced as part of the Western Australian registration and licensing requirements.

  • An iPod interface, power amplifier and speakers were added to the original working Factory AM/FM Stereo. In addition, and to avoid changing over the speedo to Km/h, I installed a HillSpeed Digital Speedometers from Bogaard Distributors.
GPS Speedo Speedo Box
  • I also have an electric window kit that I purchased from the US and is included in the price but is not yet installed.
  • Unlike Australian “utes”, the Ranchero was built using either a sedan or station wagon chassis.  The benefit of this is that behind the seats is, what would have been the foot-well of the rear passengers. In the Ranchero, the space behind the passenger is where the spare wheel and jack are located.  Behind the driver’s seat there is a great amount of storage space.

Rear behind driver's seat

  • Driveline: According to the person from whom I bought the Ranchero, the engine and transmission were professionally rebuilt at the high 90k miles mark (undocumented). The 351 “H” code 2 bl. carburettor engine is strong and responsive, with excellent oil pressure and no oil leaks or unusual noises. The 3-Speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission, which has a larger capacity oil cooler for added protection under heavy loads, shifts very smoothly through the gears.
  • Since 2007, the person from whom I bought the Ranchero had installed NEW brakes, NEW Alternator, New radiator and hoses, NEW A/C compressor, dryer and updated the remainder of the system. Also added for performance and efficiency was a PerTronix Polished Billet Distributor w/Flamethrower Coil. A 3.0:1 open differential and rear coil suspension with air shocks brings up the rear.
  • After I imported the Ranchero, I had the engine taken out and a new mild cam installed.  In addition a larger carburettor was installed.

The Ranchero purrs like a grumpy kitten at idle and roars like an angry lion when my foot is put down!

Since having the engine rebuilt I have had chrome rocker covers fitted, high capacity spark plug leads and a higher crank amp alternator fitted.

  • Wheels & Tires: “Vintage” American Racing Torq-Thrust D wheels are shod with P235/60 (front) and 255/60 R15 (rear) BFG Radial TA’s.

In addition, with the purchase of the Ranchero you will receive an Elite Marti Report for the car, 5 Workshop manuals, the original owners’ documentation and a coloured wiring diagram sourced from classiccarwiring.com.

There are many more photographs of this beautiful vehicle as well as additional information which is available on request.

This amazing example of a 1972 Ford Ranchero is located in Western Australia. It is fully registered as a LHD vehicle and licensed until May 2016.

This is one great, classic daily driver and reliable muscle truck/car and it absolutely turns heads whenever and wherever I drive it!

The price shown does not include the costs of shipping or transporting the Ranchero to the new owner.

Until next time.

“Checker” brand – El Camino-style pickup planned in relaunch

Hi everyone.

Now that Holden and Ford have been given their “last rites”, it seems that the US is suddenly interested in making “utes” or “coupe utilities” as they call them.

Chevrolet has given an indication that it may make an “El Camino” (whether it will be called that is a question for another day). I will post an article about the proposal for Chevrolet’s “El Camino “shortly. However, if the concept photos are any indications it will sell about as well as the Ford Taurus did here in Australia and they look ugly as F**k!

However, it is not only GM and Ford who are considering making utes (sorry, I refuse to call them “coupe utilities”.   Checker Motor Company (the one that used to make all of the cabs in New York)  announced plans last year to revive the American automotive brand and has released drawings of what it proposes for its first two models — an El Camino-style car-based pickup truck and a six-door airport limousine/group touring vehicle. I will focus on the “El Camino” style car-based pick-up truck (not another word for ute!)

The father of the General Manager of the Checker Motor Company, Steve Contarino, drove a Checker cab in the Boston area and Contarino became known within the Checker owners’ community for restoring the Checker Centurian, a 1967 Ghia-designed concept car. Contarino’s day job for some three decades has been modifying vehicles for the specialized demands of police and fire departments, emergency medical services and other municipal government agencies.

His original plan was simply to do Checker restorations and produce the parts needed for Checker owners to maintain their vehicles — until he discovered there actually may be a commercial market for modern Checker vehicles.

Unfortunately for us, and the world, this is the concept Contarino drawing has released.

Checker Ël Camino"

Can anybody say, “Holden FC Ute”?

FC ute fc_ute

I guess the only requirement to be a US car “designer” these days is the ability to use the Internet and not acknowledge the existence of any other country other than the US.

Cynical. Moi?

Until next time.

“Orange Bruiser”: 1972 Laverda SFC for Sale on eBay

Hi everyone.

It is not everyday that a true classic motorcycle comes up for sale. However, if you are an Italian “Superbike” aficionado (like me – I had a 1980 Laverda Jota 3CL) this magnificent example of one of Laverda’s best may just be the “ONE”  for you.

1972 Laverda SFC

The Laverda 750 SFC (super freni competizione or or super brakes competition) was developed in 1971 from the 750S road bike and is a half-faired racer that was developed to win endurance events like the Oss 24 hours, Barcelona 24 hours and the Bol D’Or at Le Mans.

Laverda line-up at 1971 Oss 24 hours race Laverda riders at Barcelona 24 hour race Laverda SFC at Bol DÓr

This it did, often placed first, second and third in the same race, and dominating the international endurance race circuit in 1971.

Distinguished by its characteristic orange paint which would become the company’s race department colour, its smooth aerodynamic fairing and up-swept exhaust, the SFC was Laverda’s flagship product and best advertisement, flaunting pedigree and the message of durability, quality, and exclusivity. Each SFC was hand-built in batches by the competition shop.

For several years after its introduction the SFC was one of the fastest bikes on the road, and one of the best handling too. But the high specification ensured that it was expensive, and fewer than 100 were built in each of the first three years.

Laverda’s fierce homologation SFC was powered by a tuned version of their nearly bulletproof parallel-twin and was available in any colour you wanted, as long as it was orange. You know, as good-looking as Ducatis are in red,and as classic as old British bikes are in black or silver, there’s something undeniably cool about a company choosing a “factory” colour so incredibly in-your-face, so polarising. Kawasaki’s green isn’t the prettiest colour, and it isn’t always flattering, but you certainly know which manufacturer made that lime-green plastic rocket, sitting across the street.

Laverda 750 SFC Fairing

The SFC’s engine was based on the rugged SF1, which was introduced in 1968 as a 650cc model, although displacement was soon bumped to 750. The bikes were a bit heavy, but this was the result of their being overbuilt, and reliability benefited: the parallel-twin had five main bearings. Parts not made in house by Laverda were chosen, regardless of their country of origin, for quality and the component list reads like a “best of” of 1970’s motorcycling performance: Ceriani, Bosch, Nippon-Denso…

Laverda SFC 750

Relatively unstressed in road-going form, the twin was capable of much more power, and the SFC was tuned to make almost 80hp. Given its rugged nature it’s no surprise that the bike performed well in endurance racing: many SFC’s come with their headlights and turn signals boxed up and unused

Laverda 750 SFC engine

Although it weighed a considerable 230kg, the wheelbase was a moderate 1,460mm and the tall SFC was a competent handler. Everything about it screamed racing, particularly with the optional two-into-one megaphone exhaust. There were no turn indicators, and the only instrumentation was a single Smiths tachometer mounted on a crude bracket in the fairing. The rider stretched out over the long 25-litre fibreglass fuel tank to crouch under the lowest fairing screen of any production motorcycle. Although one concession was made to civility, an electric start, the 750SFC was not designed for tooling around town..

1972 Laverda SFC medallion

Bidding is up to US$30,100.00 with several days left on the auction.  There is no doubt it will go much higher: with under 600 ever made. These are some of the most desirable motorcycles of the era with rarity, pedigree, and that exotic, sadly defunct “Laverda” nameplate.

730 HP Saleen “Black Label” is the Highest Powered production “Pony”

After leaving the performance car company he founded in 1984, Steve Saleen is back at the helm of Saleen, the company that bears his name.

Saleen became known in the 80s, 90s, and early part of this century for building some of the baddest Mustangs on the road and track. Saleen says that while he was back at the helm of the Company for a few years, he was waiting for the S550 Mustang to debut so that his company could do something big.

CLICK here for a 360 degree view of the 2015 Mustang

On 20 March 2015, during a special press event, Steve Saleen pulled the wraps off the all new Saleen ” Black Label“, a car about which there have been rumours for almost a year.

2015 Saleen "Black Label" 302 Mustang

This is more than just a re-badged and prettied up Mustang, the “Black Label” represents the culmination of Saleen’s 30-plus years of Mustang building and racing experience.

Since the company started building cars in 1984, our goal has always been to be at the pinnacle of late-model Mustang performance,” said Steve Saleen. “This will by far be the most refined and advanced Mustang we have built to date.”

The hood has been lowered nearly three inches “Its clearance to the supercharger is in millimetres, this really helped reduce the drag on the car”. The hood, which features a functional scoop for air intake, will be available in composite and stamped aluminium.

The 5.0-litre Coyote engine, with a Kenne-Bell twin-screw supercharger, results in the highest power output to date for a production S550, with 730 horsepower (544kW) and 600 lb-ft of torque (approx. 814Nm) on US 91-octane petrol (Australian 95 Octane). This now tops the 707 hp (527kW) Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

The Black Label S550 clearly out-handles any previous generation Saleen Mustang with its I.R.S. as a foundation. Fitted with Saleen S4 springs, shocks, sway-bars, and bushings, the car is going to be a real thrill for both street and open-track driving. Adding to the fun will be big 15-inch dimpled rotors and multi-piston brakes to further expand the performance envelope.

The Black Label uses 275/35R20 Pirelli tyres in the front and 275/40R20s in the rear to keep it firmly planted to the road. The Saleen 20-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels are available in several finishes.

Considerable time was also spent optimising lift over drag (L/D) by lengthening the front a full 1½ inches along with two inches in the rear to increase the air-foil, which thereby increases downforce for the whole car. A rear wing balances the downforce created by the front air splitter.

The interior is a mix of luxury and styling with black leather and suede seats accented in contrasting chevrons. A high contrast gauge cluster provides key vitals to the driver at a glance. Harking back to Saleen’s racing heritage is a leather wrapped steering wheel with controls for audio and a centre stack display between the gauges. Unique badging finishes off the interior that includes a dash plaque signifying year of manufacture and serial number of each vehicle.

A full set of Saleen 302 badging and graphics will also be included to complement any one of the standard or custom Saleen paint schemes available on all Saleen vehicles. To match the beauty and refinement of such a remarkable car, Saleen has developed a new paint coating with BASF to launch with this vehicle. California Sunset is a cross between a golden yellow and the hues of a setting sun to create a truly unique colour that changes with the light. .

Interior of 2015 Saleen Black Label Mustang

As with the rest of the Saleen lineup, the 2015 S302 Black Label will receive a Saleen serialization and unique Saleen VIN.

Each car is also hand signed by Steve Saleen, ensuring that it has gone through Saleen’s rigorous post-production quality control process.

It will surely be the greatest Ford-based Saleen product as well as one of the best high-performance Mustangs of all time.

Until next time.
